The Highway Rat is the latest Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book to be brought to life on our forest trails. Follow the panels, complete activities and interact with the forest as you head on a journey with The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story! The trail opened in December 2017. It is aimed at younger children, but the whole family can enjoy completing activities and spotting characters. You can find the start of the trail near the play area and it is about 0.7 miles in length.
Top tip for visiting on a damp day, or when it has been raining – remember to pack your wellies! It was drizzling when we visited and we didn’t have wellies on – our feet got very muddy! I would also ensure you know where the track is and use a map if possible, as although sign posted, we were slightly unsure which track to follow at times.
The trail is not particularly long, you could probably get round in about 20 minutes, especially if you didn’t have an activity pack, therefore it is especially suitable for younger children. However, with the activity pack (which can bought from the cafe for £3), there are activities to do along the way, such as nature collecting and wood rubs, also the Highway Rat mask is particularly exciting to wear!
There are a few aspects different from the Gruffalo trail, such as, there is no app available to download, which is a shame as my children had been fascinated by the characters coming to life from the story. Also, the activity posts along the trail are more focused on aspects of the nature in the Wyre forest rather than the characters of the story. Therefore, I would recommend explaining to your children that it is also a nature trail, as well as a hunt for the Highway Rat! Overall, it is an interesting morning or afternoon, as there is also a café and a couple of play areas, also reasonably cheap too, the car park is £3 and it is £3 for the activity pack (although you could do the trail without it).
